Yeah, you don’t actually need a Real ID.

You may have heard that you need to get a “real-ID” by October 2020 or you won’t be able to fly. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a giant fear operation designed to achieve what federalism could not.

Here is a list of other documents you can use in lieu of a RealID that will be easily accepted by the TSA, from

  • U.S. passport (get one of these! Good for 10 years and a great form of ID)
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

Keep in mind that you can actually fly domestic without any ID at all! Yeah, that’s right. You don’t actually need an ID to fly at all. The TSA will just make your life more annoying if you don’t have one of these forms of ID. (People lose their wallets all the time. You can still fly home somehow. Hmm.) They just need another reason to make your life more annoying as the pretend to stop terrorism in its tracks. (yet somehow fail 90+% of security tests..)

This is all George W. Bush’s fault, in case you were wondering who to blame for your latest unnecessary trip to DMV hell. He signed a really dumb law mandating ID standards that the feds cannot actually force states to abide by, and after many years and many court fights, the government was defeated. And so the latest fear mongering push is here to try and get your information in a federal database because they couldn’t do it themselves. Well you know what? I say no thanks Georgey.
